The Romans once worshipped the Moon Goddess here, believed to be the source of Sintra’s name, derived from the Latin “Cynthia.” Later, the Moors left their mark with splendid palaces and gardens dotting the landscape long before the Portuguese arrived after conquering Lisbon from the Moors in the 11th century AD.
Historical records from these periods are limited, however we can attest to Roman presence in the area, especially the Roman Necropolis which amazes with the artifacts left from that era; especially funeral monuments which tell stories about the people that once inhabited the area many centuries before the arrival of the Moors and the Portuguese in later centuries.
