Day Trip to Evora & Cartuxa Winery
Private Tour to Evora and Cartuxa Winery
The city of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as one of Portugal’s primary historic destinations, where walking through cobbled streets reveals more than two thousand years of history. On this custom tour, you will explore iconic landmarks like the remarkably preserved Roman Temple of Évora, the impressive Évora Cathedral, and the haunting Chapel of Bones. Beyond the historic center, you will journey into the rolling plains of the Alentejo countryside for an immersive lunch and a guided tasting of distinguished regional labels at Cartuxa Winery or the renowned Esporão Winery.
Tour Itinerary & Route
The drive from Lisbon and surrounding areas to Évora covers roughly 130 kilometers (81 miles) via utilizing motorways, taking between 1 hour 15 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes while offering scenic sections through the Alentejo countryside.
The guided exploration begins in the heart of Évora’s historic center at Praça do Giraldo for a 15-minute walking tour. This bustling square serves as a social and cultural hub surrounded by regional architecture and lively cafes. You will visit the Igreja de São Francisco, an imposing Gothic church featuring grand architectural elements and an atmospheric interior, followed by a 45-minute visit to the famous Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos). Located within the Church of Mercês’ Nucleus of Sacred Art, the chapel’s walls are covered with human bones and skulls, offering a unique historical and religious experience focused on themes of mortality.
The tour continues with a 20-minute stop at the Roman Temple of Diana, a well-preserved ancient structure that stands as a symbol of Évora’s Roman heritage and architectural grandeur. Next is a 40-minute tour of the Cathedral of Évora (Sé Catedral de Évora), which is Portugal’s largest Gothic cathedral and impresses with its massive structure, beautiful stained glass, and intricate stonework.
Guests also spend 15 minutes admiring the interior of the Igreja de São Tiago, which features a single nave with a barrel vault adorned with frescoes and vivid biblical tile panels by Baroque (16th century C.E.) ceramist Gabriel del Barco. Please note that this specific site does not maintain regular visiting hours. The Évora portion of the tour concludes with a 45-minute session at Enoturismo Cartuxa, where guests enjoy a guided wine tasting to savor renowned local vintages and learn about Alentejo viticulture.
Regional Extensions
This tour can be expanded to include neighboring towns within the Alentejo marble district, showcasing the regional variations in architecture and landscape.
- Estremoz: A fortified town dominated by a 13th-century castle and lookout tower. It is one of the world’s primary extraction sites for marble, a material seamlessly integrated into the town’s public pavements, steps, facades, and fountains.
- Vila Viçosa: The historical seat of the aristocratic House of Braganza. The town features streets, benches, and window frames constructed from local marble, and houses the Paço Ducal (Ducal Palace), which features a 110-meter facade covered entirely in regional marble.
- Monsaraz: A medieval, walled hilltop village offering panoramic views of the Alentejo landscape and the Alqueva reservoir. The historic structures and narrow pathways feature local stone and whitewashed architecture alongside regional marble details.
