Three nights in Granada and we are glad we did. The weather was superb and perfect for wandering around the Albaicín and visiting the Albaicín market, took a break at a Moroccan tea house and strolled through the old town until we accidentally got a glimpse of the Alhambra located atop a mountain. Although it was visible from many areas of Granada, for some reason from this vantage point it stood out in full splendor against the deep blue sky. My thoughts went from the present day through the thousand year history of the palace that we’ve been reading about during our pre-trip planning to fully know this wonder.

Nearby, the Cathedral of Granada commands attention with its massive and imposing exterior, a blend of Renaissance and Gothic styles that feels both grand and inviting. Its soaring stone walls and twin towers encapsulate centuries of history, giving you a sense of the city’s layered past even before you step inside. Once inside, the cathedral’s vast nave welcomes you with soaring Gothic arches and ribbed vaulted ceilings that seem to reach for the heavens, enhanced by magnificent stained-glass windows casting colorful light onto the polished floors below. For a truly magical experience, a walk up the Albaicín neighborhood at night is a must. The cobblestone streets, lined with whitewashed houses adorned with flower pots, lead you to hidden miradores, or viewpoints, offering spellbinding vistas of the Alhambra illuminated against the night sky, its silhouette glowing like a jewel nestled among the rooftops. From this high vantage point, the Alhambra’s beauty feels timeless and otherworldly, a shining crown atop the city, connecting you to centuries of history and art. The cool evening air and the quiet charm of this historic district create a perfect backdrop for contemplative wandering and unforgettable photo moments.

Unexplored but worth mentioning are places like the Sacromonte district, famous for its cave houses and flamenco shows, and the vibrant Plaza Nueva, a lively hub of bars and restaurants ideal for tasting local tapas.
