Why Are There Terraces?
One of the first questions visitors ask is why the vineyards are built on narrow stone terraces instead of flat fields.
The answer lies in the geography of the Douro Valley. The surrounding mountains consist primarily of hard schist rock, creating steep slopes that would be impossible to cultivate without human intervention. More than 2,000 years ago, local farmers began carving narrow terraces into the mountainsides, creating small, level platforms where vines could grow.
These terraces serve several important purposes. They prevent soil erosion, help retain precious rainwater during Portugal’s hot, dry summers, and maximize the amount of sunlight reaching the vines. The schist bedrock stores heat during the day and gradually releases it at night, helping grapes ripen evenly while developing the concentrated flavors for which Douro wines and Vintage Ports are renowned.
